Trim and Baseboard Installation and Repair

Baseboards, casing, quarter round and crown molding installed, replaced or repaired, then caulked and painted.

Painted room with ceiling fan, new flooring and white trim

Trim is what makes a room look finished. Baseboards cover the gap where floor meets wall, casing frames doors and windows, and crown molding softens the line at the ceiling. When trim is missing, damaged or pulling loose, the whole room looks a little rough, even if everything else is fine. That's where baseboard installation and trim repair come in.

Trim work we do

  • Installing new baseboards after flooring work
  • Replacing water-damaged or swollen baseboards
  • Adding quarter round or shoe molding along floors
  • Installing or replacing door and window casing
  • Adding crown molding in a room
  • Re-nailing and re-caulking trim that's pulled away
  • Window stools and aprons
  • Filling, caulking and painting trim

Signs your trim needs attention

  • Gaps between trim and wall. Usually from settling or seasonal movement. Caulk fixes small gaps. Big ones may need re-nailing.
  • Swollen or crumbling baseboards. Common near tubs, toilets and exterior doors where MDF gets wet.
  • Cracked or split casing from doors being slammed or kicked.
  • Missing pieces after a flooring change or old repair.
  • Dented, chewed or scuffed trim from kids and pets.

If baseboards are swollen near a toilet or tub, the cause may be water at the floor. We'll check whether there's a flooring problem to fix before putting new trim back.

Doing it the careful way

Good trim work is all about the joints. A few things we pay attention to:

  • Coped inside corners on baseboard where it makes sense, so the joint stays tight as the house moves.
  • Scarf joints on long walls, cut at an angle so the seam hides better than a straight butt joint.
  • Nailing into studs so trim stays put.
  • Caulk and fill before paint, so the finished line is smooth.

Older homes

Many older houses in Hogansville and LaGrange have wide, tall baseboards and detailed casing you just don't see in newer homes. When we need to patch in a section, we look for the closest match or build up a profile from stock pieces. We try to keep the character of the house rather than swap in something that looks out of place. Our guide on older home repairs talks more about working with older houses.

Trim is often the last step after other work. We can handle it alongside interior painting, door repair or flooring repair, so you're not chasing a second crew to finish the room.

Common questions

Can you match the old trim in my house?

Many common profiles are still available. For older homes with trim that isn't made anymore, we can often find a close match or build up a profile from simple pieces.

Do you paint trim after installing it?

Yes. We fill nail holes, caulk the seams and paint it, so it's finished when we leave.

Do I need quarter round with my new floor?

Often, yes. Floating floors need a small gap at the walls, and quarter round or shoe molding covers it without pinning the floor down.

My baseboards are swollen at the bottom. Why?

MDF baseboards soak up water and swell. It's common in bathrooms and near exterior doors. We replace the damaged pieces, sometimes with a more water-resistant material.
